New Delhi: Rising concerns on oil prices and carbon emissions has made fuel efficiency top-most priority in a car buyer’s list. The higher the mileage, the better chances vehicle has to succeed in the Indian market.
ARAI mileage is the maximum mileage a vehicle can provide under standard testing conditions.~While the petrol-powered vehicles are considered more environment friendly due to lower initial cost and better NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels, their diesel powered counterparts offer low-end torque and good resale value in the Indian market.
ETAuto brings a list of the 2020 top 10 fuel-efficient sedans and hatchbacks across the variants, based on ARAI mileage.
1. Maruti Suzuki Dzire2. Maruti Suzuki Swift
A performance hatchback, the new Maruti Suzuki Swift was launched in 2018. Its manual and automatic diesel variants have a mileage of 28.4 kmpl while the manual and automatic petrol variants provide a mileage of 22.0 kmpl.
3. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz
With a SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle By Suzuki) engine, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz gives 20.28 with manual petrol variant and 28.09 kmpl with automatic petrol variant.
4. Honda Amaze
Launched in 2018, the compact sedan’s mileage is 19.0 to 27.4 kmpl. While the manual diesel variant has a mileage of 27.4 kmpl, its automatic diesel variant provides 23.8 kmpl. The manual petrol variant has a mileage of 19.5 kmpl and automatic petrol variant delivers 19.0 kmpl.
5. Maruti Suzuki Baleno
The premium hatchback provides mileage of 21.4 to 27.39 kmpl. Its manual diesel variant has a mileage of 27.39 kmpl while its manual petrol variant has a mileage of 23.87 kmpl. The automatic petrol variant gives 21.4 kmpl.

7. Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
Launched last year, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios has the manual and automatic diesel variant offering mileage of 26.2 kmpl. Its manual and automatic petrol variant gives 20.7 kmpl.
8. Ford Aspire
The mileage is 16.3 to 26.1 kmpl. Its manual diesel variant gives 26.1 kmpl while manual petrol variant has a mileage of 20.4 kmpl. The automatic petrol variant has a mileage of 16.3 kmpl, along with manual CNG variant offering 20.4 km/kg.
9. Honda City
With the 2020 Honda set to launch in a month, the current model offers a mileage of 17.14 to 25.6 kmpl. Its manual diesel variant has a mileage of 25.6 kmpl while automatic petrol variant gives 18.0 kmpl. Its manual petrol variant has a mileage of 17.4 kmpl.
10. Ford Figo
The Ford Figo mileage is 20.4 to 25.5 kmpl. Its manual diesel variant gives 25.5 kmpl while manual and automatic petrol variant has a mileage of 20.4 kmpl.
ARAI mileage is the maximum mileage a vehicle can provide under standard testing conditions. It is determined by conducting a vehicle test under regulated conditions, namely speed, rpm, tyre pressure and the number of gears changed, etc, which are largely uniform across different vehicles under testing.
