The championship was blown wide open on the first weekend of the coronavirus-delayed season, when reigning world champion Marc Marquez crashed and broke his arm.
Ultimately never returning to racing in 2020, a cast of new stars stepped to the fore in the Spaniard's absence, with five of the six manufacturers taking to the podium and four of them scoring victories - including a maiden success for KTM at Brno.
As the likes of Fabio Quartararo, Maverick Vinales and Andrea Dovizioso's expected title challenges crumbled, Joan Mir and Suzuki emerged as the strongest force, consistently tallying up podiums to secure a historic first title for the marque in 20 years with a race to spare.
